Love Comes Softly is a Hallmark Channel movie based on one of the series of novels by Jannette Oke.
Katherine Heigl plays Marty, a beautiful young woman who travels out west by covered wagon to build a new home for her family. Tragically, on the first day on their new land, her husband is killed while trying to chase down one of the horses that escaped during the night.
After several days of grieving alone, Marty finally buries her husband, then must face the fact that it will be months before she is able to travel back home.
Alone and frightened, a widowed stranger makes a proposition for her. Marry him and help raise his young daughter, and in turn he will provide her with shelter and care until the following spring when she can return home.
Forced by circumstance to take him up on his offer, the movie plays out the trials and tribulations of living in the old west far from what most would call civilization, as well as the difficulties that face a step-family.
