17 Horses

A rancher with three sons died and he wanted to leave his favorite son 1/2 of the horses, his second favorite son 1/3 of the horses, and his least favorite son 1/9 of the horses.

But, the sons could not figure out a way to split up 17 horses the way their father wanted.

So they called an attorney, who rode out to the ranch and resolved their issue.

How did he do it?

Hate Mail

Some hate mail-

Having just been exposed to Tony's indelicate epigrams, I ponder how best to express my disgust at Tony's total lack of sensitivity and reasoning. The key point of the following exposition is that Tony has for a long time been arguing that the rigors that his victims have been called upon to undergo have been amply justified in the sphere of concrete achievement. Had he instead been arguing that the first casualty of his ebullitions is justice, I might cede him his point. As it stands, the leap of faith required to bridge the logical gap in Tony's arguments is simply too terrifying for me to contemplate. What I do often contemplate, however, is how his goofy opinions often resemble an inverted fairy tale in that the triumph of innocence comes at the start and the ugly sisters of demagogism and irrationalism enter on stage in triumph for the final curtain. There are two related questions in this matter. The first is to what extent he has tried to put the most money-grubbing big-mouths I've ever seen on the federal payroll. The other is whether or not I don't know what bothers me most about Tony. Is it his specious arguments, his illogical reasoning, his obscurantist claims, his unreasonable speculations, or any of the many forms of pseudoscholarship we see in his anecdotes? In any case, Tony's apologists always detect profound wisdom in what is most incomprehensible to them personally. We can therefore extrapolate that Tony truly believes that everyone and everything discriminates against him -- including the writing on the bathroom stalls. I hope you realize that that's just an insincere pipe dream from an obtrusive pipe and that in the real world, my love for people necessitates that I draw a picture of what we conceive of under the word "cinephotomicrography". Yes, I face opposition from Tony. However, this is not a reason to quit but to strive harder.

When Tony was first found trying to rescue animalism from the rubbish heap of history, dust it off, slap on a coat of cheap sophistry, and market it as new and improved, I was scared. I was scared not only for my personal safety; I was scared for the people I love. And now that Tony is planning to turn positions of leadership into positions of complacency, I'm terrified. If I had to choose the most uncongenial specimen from his welter of cynical gabble, it would have to be his claim that he is omnipotent. Tony thinks that he is the one who will lead us to our great shining future. However, his arguments don't even prove his point.

Tony is known for walking into crowded rooms and telling everyone there that the few of us who complain regularly about his pronouncements are simply spoiling the party. Try, if you can, to concoct a statement better calculated to show how surly Tony is. You can't do it. Not only that, but I have a dream that my children will be able to live in a world filled with open spaces and beautiful wilderness -- not in a dark, oppressive world run by presumptuous clodpolls. Finally, to those of you who are faithfully helping me wage war on totalitarianism, let me extend, as always, my deepest gratitude and my most affectionate regards.

Broken Foot

Wednesday night (early Thursday morning) I caught my little toe on a mattress on the floor as I was walking briskly (running??) through the house. My wife was cleaning out a closet and I didn't pay attention to where I was stepping as I ran through the hall.

It completely dislodged it, snapped it outward, and was one of the most disgusting things I'd ever seen in my life. If you put your hand into an "L" shape, the way your thumb sticks out is what my little toe looked like sticking out the side of my foot.

I gutted it up and shoved it back into place, and I got the joint where it seemed to go back in like it belonged, but my toe was still crooked as could be and dangling like wet spaghetti. So my wife grabbed it and straightened it out, then we taped it up and put some ice on it. I don't know what was worse- the pain or the horrible bone grinding noises it was making. It sounded like Zombie ooze in a George Romero movie.

I went to bed, then a couple of hours later it was time or work so I stopped by the emergency clinic on the way in. And sure enough- broken to bits. I broke my intermediate phalanx and proximal phalanx and knocked the metatarsal 5 out of whack. But, the good news was the doctor said my wife and I got all the bones set as good as any doctor could do it. (Harvard medical, here I come?)....

I made it through the day at work without any pain medication. I hate taking anything while I'm trying instruct. And I made it through today, but it was nearly as bad as yesterday. And I'm loving the attention, but after explaining what happened 100 times, it gets old.

It seems to be healing okay, so hopefully it will continue to do so and I'll back back to my usually banged up self soon. The doctor said because of my recurring blood clots and stasis to my leg and foot it would take longer than normal. I hope he's wrong!

Stargate Atlantis: 8/15/08 Episode

This weeks SGA was a very interesting show. Over the last few weeks, its seems they have been testing the waters to see how fans would react to certain characters going away, getting bigger parts, or in the case of this week- changing "forms" (faces).

First, Woolsey shocked me. He definitely showed he has bravery, which was one of the last things I thought I'd ever see come out of his character. But, they didn't over do it the first time- if you were watching closely you could see him sweating and letting out a heavy "whew" after he told them to sink the city. I hope Woolsey continues to toughen up as time goes on. Do you believe if he does that we will all quit hating him so much? Will he step up and actually lead instead of dictating? I have had a contempt for his character since he was first introduced, but the last two big roles he played, both impressed me. As much as I hate to admit it, I actually feel he is fitting in, even much better than Samantha Carter (sorry, scifi geeks, its true!).

The Weir situation shocked me as well. Through the entire show, I didn't think the Replicator was her. I kept waiting on them to demand more proof and then she would fail and be exposed.

And in the end, maybe it wasn't really her. Only time will tell. I think this storyline, like the Woolsey, was another way to test out the waters to see how people would react to Weir returning, but having a different form. For me, "both" Weirs are knockouts and I'll have my eyes glued to the TV no matter which plays the part. I like them both. Both are beautiful, sexy, and friendly yet strong characters. What else could a red blooded, middle aged, overweight, nerd ask for?

Which brings up my final thought- Is Weir going to return? The second Weir, that is. The ending definitely left a lot open. What are your thoughts? Will Weir return? Would you accept her into the role? For me I say YES, especially after Woolsey changing my opinion of him over the last couple of episodes. If he can do it, Fran can too.

Stargate Atlantis: 7/1/08 Episode

I enjoyed Friday's episode quite a bit. Unfortunately, as we all know, most sci-fi plots have all been used, recycled, and used some more. This one was no different, but I liked the way they went into reverse and picked up some extra cargo on the way. It kept it interesting enough, at least for me and the kids. I think it did a good job of putting the viewer like they were right there in the middle of the action and in a hurry ourselves. And, maybe one day they might wish to go back to explore who those monsters were, and what made the sun dwarf so quickly, and what collided with the planet so many millions of years ago.

And on another note- isn't it strange Woolsey wasn't in this episode, such a short time after his entering a much larger and more important role? Watching the episode, I just felt like there was an elephant in the living room no one was talking about. But checking the website, it looks like they are promoting him quite a bit. Are they maybe seeing how the promotion goes before getting him into the seat full time? Which brings up my next point-

The preview of next week's episode made me more than anxious to see it. Is this a way to get Weir back in and giving Woolsey the boot, without having to bring back "Weir"?

Pigs

Last Tuesday Laura Bush exited Air Force one with a pig under each arm. As she entered the White House, the Marine standing guard looked at her.

"Nice pigs, ma'am" he said.

"Why, these aren't pigs" the First Lady responded. "They are authentic Arkansas Razorbacks. I got one for George, and one for Dick."

The Marine snapped to attention and saluted.

"Nice trade ma'am", he replied.
