17 Horses

A rancher with three sons died and he wanted to leave his favorite son 1/2 of the horses, his second favorite son 1/3 of the horses, and his least favorite son 1/9 of the horses.

But, the sons could not figure out a way to split up 17 horses the way their father wanted.

So they called an attorney, who rode out to the ranch and resolved their issue.

How did he do it?

It was easy.

He put his horse into the mix, which made 18 horses.

Then he divided them up:

1/2 = 9

1/3 = 6

1/9 = 2

9 + 6 + 2 = 17 horses!

Then he got back on his horse and left.
